Okay, the past few days have been crazy. We had a GI check-up on Wednesday, and an allergist check-up on Thursday. When I scheduled these Makayla was sleeping for several hours in the morning. I made the appts around 2:30pm each. Well, about a week ago she changed her sleep schedule and dropped her morning nap. Now she sleeps for 3 hours or so in the afternoon. Perfect timing, huh? Needless to say the past few days have been a challenge. My baby needs her sleep like her Mama. :-)
We really haven't learned anything new in either appointment. The GI was happy that she was growing a little. She didn't gain as many grams (yes, that is how they measure everything) as she did the previous visit, but they were still pleased. Of course, they would like her gain to be at a much higher pace. They once again said as for now she can avoid the feeding tube, but as always, it can still be in her future. They still want her to drink more ounces of fluid a day, but she did say everyone's need can vary. They told us that she needs 1,000 calories a day (which personally seems like a lot to me considering an adult can consume 1,200 a day). We know she isn't getting close to that number, but she must be consuming something since she is gaining a little. This week at the GI she weighed in at 18lbs 10oz which is up 2oz from the previous week...not a lot but something.
The allergist was pleased with the little improvements we have seen. He was still considering going all elemental with her diet (meaning formula only...no food), but he decided to hold off for now. His biggest concern was that she really wouldn't get the calories she needs a day if we removed the food she does eat. He's still not sure if she truly has allergies or just intolerances. I guess it's hard to diagnose and especially at this young age. We are to continue with the no dairy, soy, rice, gluten, wheat, beef, nuts, & shellfish for now. We are to see him again in 3 months. He is planning to restest the beginning of next year. If her growth stops again between now & then though, he will do more testing immediately.
So nothing new was really learned & no answers were given...sometimes I think they are as stumped as we are. We will continue on with her strict diet and pray that she will take more fluids. The GI prefers she takes 3 meals & bedtime for her formula. We have been giving her a little all day long as she won't drink much at a time. For breakfast she will only take 3oz with a few bites of fruit if I'm lucky.
It's a never ending battle...I feel such pressure on my shoulders to get her to drink more & more...it's so hard because she doesn't understand what they will do to her if I fail...God help me! Thank you all again for being an amazing support system for us! Trust me, I know that this battle is nothing compared to what some are suffering with their little ones, but it still is a difficult journey. This is where faith & trust in God come in to play...that's all I have left...and honestly, that's a good thing to be left with!
